Robbery Prevention for Businesses

Robbery prevention begins with reducing opportunity

Be Proactive

 

Ø        Install a height indicator strip on the front door frame.

Ø        Place a workable camera at eye level inside the business, aimed at the front door.

Ø        Develop a strong store policy -- Know it! Enforce It! Educate your employees!

Ø        Be aware of your surroundings. Reduction of opportunity equals reduction of vulnerability.

 

Interior Opportunities

 

Greet All Customers as They Enter.

Ø        Make eye contact.

Ø        Ask open-ended questions.

Ø        Make transactions personal.

Be Aware of Who is Inside the Business.

Ø        Watch for suspicious persons of activities.

 

Keep the Business Clean and Uncluttered.

 

Ø        Interior and exterior should be well lit.

Ø        Do not block view throughout the store or outside into the parking lot with display items, posters or signs.

 

Enforce Store Policies.

 

Ø        Clearly posted rules eliminate confusion.

 

Exterior Opportunities

 

Increase Visibility.

 

Ø        Lights.

Ø        Trimmed landscape.

Ø        Keep windows clear of posters and/or signs.

 

Control Access.

 

Ø        Keep rear doors locked at all times.

Ø        Keep doors locked when the business is closed.

Ø        Keep the dumpster areas locked.

 

Recognize Suspicious Activity.

Ø        Watch for people loitering before or after business hours.

Ø        Look for unoccupied vehicles.

Ø        Watch for people wearing clothing out-of-season (i.e. jacket in middle of summer).

Ø        Watch out for any "odd" behavior.

 

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!

 

Ø        Have specific rules for employees.

Ø        Vary routines.

Ø        Safety in numbers.

 

During a Robbery

 

Ø        Cooperate.

 

Ø        Try to remain calm.

Ø        Do not resist.

Ø        Do not talk or ask questions.

Ø        Do not stare.

Ø        Expect to be threatened.

Ø        Keep hands in plain sight.

Ø        Activate alarm only if able to do so safely.

 

After a Robbery

 

Ø        DO NOT chase or follow suspect(s).

Ø        Activate silent alarm, if not done so already.

Ø        Call 9-1-1 and say "I've just been robbed."

Ø        Stay on the line to answer all questions.

Ø        Lock the front door and put up a "closed due to emergency" sign.

Ø        Ask everyone not to leave until the police arrive.

Ø        DO NOT touch anything!  Try to preserve the crime scene.

Ø        Do not discuss observations with anyone.
