Fire Prevention

Fire Investigation and Hazardous Materials

The Fire Investigation team is composed of arson investigators, working in conjunction with the Goodyear Police Department, along with a cadre of fire prevention and suppression personnel acting as support investigators. The division is also responsible for the investigation of fires to determine cause and origin of commercial and residential properties. All fires of suspicious origin in the city are investigated and all suspects are prosecuted.

Fire origin and cause determination are conducted consistent with the fire code, scientific investigative methods, and nationally recognized guidelines for the investigation of fire and explosions. Hazardous materials investigations are examined for fire code compliance subsequent to spills, mishandling or emergency incidents.

Hazardous Materials Permit Program

The fire permit program was established to ensure the ability to track hazards within the jurisdiction and provide technical review for plans and site acceptance to support the life and safety of the community. The program determines conflicts with zoning and allows examination toward proper storage, use, and handling of processes and materials.

The fire permit program consists of an annual inspection and permit issuance for all occupancies with flammable or combustible storage, aircraft hangars, and occupancies with hazardous materials over the fire code amounts. Permits are issued to businesses storing and using hazardous materials or flammable/combustible liquid storage. Goodyear also requires plans to be reviewed for all above ground storage tanks.

The annual inspections and permit issuance are conducted each quarter of the year. Goodyear also inspects pressure vessels and hazmat processing equipment such as piping, reactors, chemical mixing equipment, pressure relief devices and spray booths.
