Emergency Management

CERT Course Information

The CERT course is delivered in the community by a team of first responders who have the required knowledge and skills to instruct the sessions. Instructors have completed the CERT Train-the-Trainer (TTT) course conducted by the Arizona Department of Emergency Management and/or the Emergency Management Institute. This 9 session course will meet two evenings per week for approximately 3 hours, depending on the topic covered. Topics include:

Instructor teaching class

Disaster Preparedness includes an introduction, the impacts, the hazards posed by building structures and nonstructural items and the role of CERT in disaster response

Disaster Fire Suppression includes fire chemistry, identifying and reducing potential fire hazards, basic fire suppression strategy, firefighting resources and firefighting techniques

Disaster Medical Operations is a two-part class and includes:

w  treatment strategies for life-threatening conditions

w  principals of triage

w  "airway, bleeding, shock"

w  head-to-toe patient assessments

w  establishing treatment areas

w  treatments for burns, lacerations, fractures, sprains and other injuries

Light Search and Rescue Operations includes search and rescue priorities and resources, techniques for situation size-up, lifting, cribbing, and victim removal and rescuer safety including rescuer limitations and construction-related hazards

Disaster Psychology and Team Organization includes the post-disaster emotional environment, CERT organization, CERT decision making and documentation

Terrorism and CERT defines terrorism and discusses terrorism targets, weapons and the B-NICE indicators

Disaster Medical Review

Pulling It All Together includes a mock exercise using the skills obtained in the previous weeks as well as the graduation ceremony

Optional: NIMS (National Incident Management System) IS100 and IS700 Created by FEMA, this training and testing is required for all federal, state, local, tribal, private sector and non-governmental personnel who have a direct role in emergency management and response
