In June of 2003, Goodyear formed a fully operational
Hazardous Materials Team. The team is prepared to respond to any hazardous
materials/weapons of mass destruction incident that occurs in the west
valley. The Hazardous Materials Team can respond in the event of nuclear,
biological, or chemical warfare incidents, and will assist in improving
emergency planning such incidents.
Because of the nature of hazardous materials, known or
unknown, hazardous materials incidents tend to be long in duration and
require many resources to mitigate the situation and comply with Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. The Goodyear Hazardous
Materials Team provides training to other members of our department to assist
on the scene of an incident.
Training includes familiarization with dressing entry
crews and setting up and operating the decontamination phase of an incident.
Additionally, the new expertise is available to other departments as a
resource in emergency planning and safety.
Currently, there are 7 hazardous materials units
(Phoenix-2, Chandler, Surprise, Glendale, Goodyear, and Tempe) serving the 23
departments in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Consortium.
