Get Yours on: Join the mustache craze in Goodyear on July 4

City to go for Guinness World Record of largest group wearing false mustaches

Have you ever wanted to be part of a Guinness World Records event?

July 4 at Goodyear Ballpark is your chance to participate in an event that the city hopes to win by more than a hair.

During Goodyear’s Star Spangled 4th of July event, the city will be passing out up to 3,000 “mustaches” to people who want to be a part of the city’s attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest group wearing false mustaches.  The mustache event is expected to be held in the seating area from 7:35 to 8 p.m.

Mark Kimball, operations coordinator for Goodyear Ballpark, received notification from the New York office of the London-based Guinness World Records organization on June 10 that the city’s application was accepted to attempt the record. The city plans to fulfill Guinness’ requirements for setting the record that includes keeping an accurate count of participants, photographing the event and having expert witnesses make sure the event is within guidelines.

“We’re good to go for the official attempt,” Kimball said. “We wanted to do something that would involve the crowd. This isn’t like one guy eating two dozen chili peppers, but something that would include a lot of people. People are going to eat this up.”

If successful, Goodyear will surpass the current world record of 1,532 fake mustaches worn at the Gilda's LaughFest held in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 7, 2013, according to Guinness World Records.

Goodyear’s Star Spangled 4th event, which averages about 15,000 attendees every year, is presented by Fry’s Food Stores and Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry is sponsoring the Wet Zone, the water inflatable area for kids. Food vendors also will be present, Village Inn restaurant is sponsoring a pie eating contest and the local band Groove Merchants will provide live music. Fireworks will start after dark.

Gates for the event open at 6 p.m. and Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord, who will be accompanied by City Council members, will present welcoming remarks at 7 p.m.

Mustaches that are draw on by a pen or marker or taped on mustaches are not permitted.

“Because the ballpark is in its fifth anniversary year, we want to do something special,” said Debbie Diveney, business operations supervisor for Goodyear Ballpark.  “Mustaches are hot items right now. The earlier the people get here, the better.”
