Baseball’s version of “American Idol” underway
Goodyear Centennials open field for Fathers and Sons to play catch on Father’s Day
When Spring Training ended at Goodyear Ballpark in late March, it didn’t mean that baseball was done for the year there. In fact, another season is just beginning.
On Friday, May 31, the Goodyear Centennials opened their season in the baseball’s independent professional Freedom League by beating the Vallejo (Calif.) Admirals, 4-0. After its first full week of action, the Centennials now have a record of 5 wins and 2 losses, and are in second place in the league behind the Phoenix Prospectors. The Centennials will begin hosting the Prospectors on Thursday, June 13, a four-game series that will conclude on Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16. On Sunday, fathers can play catch with their sons on the field about an hour prior to the game. Game times are at 7:05 p.m.
The league consists of players ranging from right out of high school to some with Minor and Major League experience. They players again are hoping to sign a contract with a Major League team.
“This is baseball’s version of “American Idol,” said Joe Sperle,” president of the Freedom League. “There are many young and talented players in the league who might’ve been overlooked or trying to make a comeback.”
“These are players playing for the love of the game,” Sperle added. “Some of these players might be able to sign a contract with a Major League team.
This year marks the second year of the Freedom League, which consists of four teams in Arizona. The Centennials will play more than 40 games at Goodyear Ballpark this season. Playoffs begin in September.
Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, seniors and military service members. Tickets can be ordered through the Freedom League’s website, www.freedomprofessionalbaseballleague.com or purchased at the ballpark the day of the game.
