Goodyear committee moving forward on city’s General Plan
Open house meetings scheduled on General Plan for public input
In the last decade, the City of Goodyear has grown by leaps and bounds. And now, the city is preparing a blueprint for future growth and is ready to hear more public input on its General Plan.
The 25-member General Plan Committee, which mostly consists of Goodyear residents, is continuing to move forward with a flexible plan that addresses future growth for the 160,000 acres or a 247 square-mile Planning Area and maps out how the city could look when it’s built out. Areas that are being studied include transportation, parks and recreation, residential land use as well as agricultural, commercial and industrial and job growth in the next 10 years.
The General Plan 2025 Committee hopes to present a proposed General Plan to City Council for approval in June of 2014 and place it before city voters on the General Election Ballot for ratification the following November.
For the first time in decades, the city is revisiting and revising its transportation master plan as well as its parks and recreation master plan as part of the process.
“This is really an exciting time in Goodyear,” said Katie Wilken, a Goodyear City Planner who is the project manager for the Goodyear General Plan. “Since 2000, Goodyear has experienced a boom, but like all cities, that slowed down with the economy. We’re set for another boom once the economy comes back strong.”
In addition to the city launching its interactive website, www.goodyearconnects.com on February 11 for residents to provide input and suggestions on the General Plan, the city will host three General Plan open house meetings this month:
- Tuesday, February 26 at Goodyear Municipal Court, 185 N. 145th Ave.
- Wednesday, February 27 at Western Sky Middle School cafeteria, 4095 N. 144th Ave.
- Thursday, February 28 at Estrella Starpointe Resident’s Club, 17665 Elliot Road
- All meetings are from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and each will present the same information.
Goodyear residents and all interested parties are encouraged to attend one of these meetings to learn about the General Plan and provide their thoughts and ideas about Goodyear’s future.
“We’re excited to get started in discussing topics in detail. I consider us at the beginning of the process,” Wilken added.
