Oh, Canada! Team Canada takes on Cincinnati Reds, March 6
Goodyear Ballpark to host “Canada Night” during World Baseball Classic
The City of Goodyear is set to host a team participating in the world’s premier baseball event in a game filled with Canadian flare.
On Wednesday, March 6, Team Canada will take on the Cincinnati Reds in an exhibition game during the 2013 World Baseball Classic at Goodyear Ballpark, 1933 South Ballpark Way.
Game time in Goodyear is at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
The World Baseball Classic, which is sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation, is the premier international baseball tournament. This year’s classic features teams from 16 countries.
So, take me out to the ballgame. Take me out to the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and pizza with Canadian bacon on it.
Wait a minute. What about peanuts and Cracker Jack?
Yes, that too, but pizza with Canadian bacon is just part of the “culinary fare” fans could get a taste of that evening.
The night also will be filled with Canadian culture, trivia and prizes - Canadian flags will be given to the first 1,000 fans, and beverages will be available that originated from our neighboring country north of the border.
Former Arizona State University star right fielder Tim Smith, who signed with the Minnesota Twins in 2011, is on Team Canada’s roster.
And that’s not all: Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord will present a proclamation, declaring March 6 as “Canada Day” in Goodyear.
“Canadians make up a larger part of our snowbird community in the West Valley, and we look forward to seeing them at the game. It will be a fun night for baseball fans and anyone looking for a unique cultural experience blended in with a sporting event,” Mayor Lord said.
Tickets for the game are available, ranging from $8 for lawn seats and $9 for outfield box and outfield reserve seats. Tickets ordered before February 24 will cost $6. World Baseball Classic souvenirs also will be available in the Team Shop.
Arizona is home to more than 140 Canadian businesses, and more than 650,000 Canadians visited Arizona last year alone, according to the Canada Arizona Business Council. Many Goodyear communities also are home to hundreds of “snowbirds” from Canada.
Tickets for the game can be purchased in person at the Goodyear Ballpark Ticket Office and online through Reds.com/Spring or by phone at 1-800-745-3000.
