September/October 2012 - Joe Pizzillo, Councilmember

Goodyear Volunteers Worth a Mint to Taxpayers

Any time we talk about the City's budget, we always focus on the obvious. With the budget just approved this summer, we talked about lowering the food tax, refinancing debt to save tax dollars and restructuring government to reduce spending and increase efficiency.

What we don't mention is the money we've saved over the years thanks to volunteers.

That's right. Just since 2007, Goodyear residents have saved themselves and their fellow taxpayers almost $2 million by offering to help at the ballpark, Fire Department, Police Department, city parks, City Hall and countless other assignments around the City.

Admittedly, in an annual operating budget of $79 million an average savings of about $385,000 a year doesn't seem that big. But truly it is.

The money that we save allows us to do things such as install new playground equipment in parks, expand recreation programs, and maintain our streets and water systems to ensure they are safe and efficient.

In addition to the fiscal impact, it is also worth noting that the number of volunteer hours has tripled since the program began five years ago. This fact alone is a testament to the commitment Goodyear residents have to their community.

When you think of the dollars saved and the hours logged, without question volunteers have had a major impact on the quality of life in Goodyear. And for that, I want to offer a heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.
