Statement from Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord on the passing of Goodyear Council Member Gary Gelzer
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The City of Goodyear lost a great public servant and I lost a beloved friend over the weekend when Goodyear Council Member Gary Gelzer succumbed to his brief battle with cancer. His illness came without notice and has robbed all of us of the talents, energy and passion of a man who loved his community, loved his family and truly cared about people. A friend of mine for many years, Gary was a strategic thinker, a spirited and lively advocate, and very knowledgeable. He loved transportation issues and especially trains. In many ways, he was my rock. In every way, he was dear to me. The Council meets tonight with a heavy heart but will continue its work this evening honoring his commitment to public service that remains an example to us all.
Background on the late Council Member Gary Gelzer:
Gary Gelzer was appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission on February 24, 2003, and served until December 13, 2010 when he was appointed to the City Council. Prior to serving on the P & Z Commission, Gary attended virtually every Commission meeting, and often made public comments on matters before the Commission.
He was a strong advocate for quality development, and enhanced city services. When Gary Gelzer assumed the role as Chairman of the Commission, he consistently assisted the Council with the screening of prospective new members to the Commission. Gary also served on the 2003 General Plan Advisory Committee, the 2002 Farmland Preservation/Desert Open Space Committee, and the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport Master Plan Committee.
He was appointed to the Goodyear City Council in December 2010 and would have been eligible for re-election next March.
Gary was a retired Navy officer and business executive with a BA in History from Northwestern University, an MBA from Dartmouth College, and an MS in Geography from St. Cloud University.
Arrangements are pending.
