Citizen Committee Starts Work Mapping Goodyear's Future

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – A citizen committee responsible for planning the future of Goodyear was appointed by the City Council last night, launching an 18 month effort to develop goals and policies for growth and development in the city through 2025.

North subdivisions resident Chuck Watson will chair the group of 27 people, including three alternates, responsible for working with local residents, businesses, and other community members on a vision for the Goodyear 2025 General Plan scheduled to go before city voters in November 2014. Canyon Trails resident Brandon Creek will serve as committee vice-chairman.

"Residents who care about their community should get to know this committee," said Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord. "Their work will guide every growth decision we make for the next decade," she said.

The last general plan was approved by voters in November 2003. Since, then Lord said the city has doubled in size, noting planners predict the city will double again during the next general plan cycle.

"This is your chance to tell this Council and future Councils how you want Goodyear to manage future growth and maintain our quality of life," she said. The planning process will begin with visioning the future of the community. The Goodyear 2025 General Plan will represent the roadmap to achieve that vision. The Council worked hard to make sure the committee was diverse and represented every aspect of life in the City.

"We have people of all ages and interests represented on the panel," said Council Member Bill Stipp, who, along with Council Members Wally Campbell and Gary Gelzer, helped interview and recommend the committee members.

"We worked very hard to make sure this group looked and felt like Goodyear," Council Member Campbell said. The committee will hold its kick-off meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the Goodyear Justice Facility, 185 N. 145th Avenue at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more information about the Goodyear 2025 General Plan please visit www.goodyearaz.gov/goodyear2025.
