Community Emergency Response Team Classes Offered by the City of Goodyear

(GOODYEAR, AZ) Ð Learn to help your neighbors or co-workers in event of a disaster by attending Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes. Open to residents of Goodyear over 18 years of age, the first 8-week course begins Thursday, April 6 and runs through May 25 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Classes are held at Goodyear City Hall, 190 N. Litchfield Road, Room 117. City of Goodyear employees who have been trained as CERT trainers will be conducting the classes.

The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Members of neighborhood watch groups, community organizations, communities of faith, employees, school staff, scouting organizations and other groups that come together regularly for a common purpose are natural candidates for the training.

Using their training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace during an event when professional responders like Police, Fire Department or Public Works staff are not immediately available to help. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community. Distribution and/or installation of smoke alarms, replacement of smoke alarm batteries in the homes of seniors, distribution of disaster education material, and provision of services at special events are also services that can be provided by CERT trained people.
