It’s Official – I-10 Widening Approved by MAG

(GOODYEAR, AZ) Thanks to April 26th’s unanimous vote of The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Regional Council, Goodyear’s eight-mile stretch of I-10 will be widened four years ahead of schedule with design beginning this year and construction in 2007.  There will be four lanes and one HOV lane in each direction from Loop 101 to Sarival by the end of 2009!

The good news for Avondale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park (cities sharing the costs for this eight-mile portion) is that the shared interest costs are down to about $13 million versus the $66 million they were expecting just a couple of months ago or the $90 million they told when they started the project.

The three participating cities still have to complete the Intergovernmental Agreements (IGA) to determine what percent of the $13 million in interest each will pay.

The stack that will someday be built where I-10 and Loop 303 intersect at Cotton Lane will actually take up almost a two-mile stretch between Sarival and Citrus.  In order to build the stack, I-10 will need to be realigned between these two arterials.  The original MAG 20-year transportation plan calls for the realignment to occur in 2011, so it will just occur as scheduled.

Because the 10 miles between Citrus and SR 85 (two miles in Goodyear and eight miles in Buckeye) were not in the original 2011-14 MAG plan, they were never intended to be accelerated into the 2007-2011 plan. Construction of this 10-mile stretch was originally scheduled to begin in 2023.  However, due to all the work Goodyear and the other Southwest Valley cities have done so far, start of construction of the miles between Citrus and SR 85 will be moved up 10 years to 2013, after the two-mile realignment has taken place.
