Curby and the Collectors – Singing Messengers for Goodyear’s Sanitation Program Marketing Campaign

(GOODYEAR, AZ) Curby, the shaggy red-headed cartoon character with the green shirt that Goodyear developed as a mascot for its new a sanitation program marketing campaign, came to life at Monday’s City Council meeting.  Curby and the Collectors, all dressed in the familiar green shirts, surprised the City Council by demonstrating their singing prowess with the song, “Reuse. Reduce. Recycle.”

Curby and the Collectors have a 4-song repertoire with familiar tunes and “trashy” lyrics to help educate the public about the new sanitation services. The seven-member singing group is made up of city employees and was the brainchild of the Communications Division which is preparing the marketing campaign to educate Goodyear residents about the City’s new automated curbside trash and recycling program. “We developed Curby as a cute mascot that children could relate to. We also thought a singing group would catch on with the children as well as adults. Children are often the biggest influence in getting a household to change its habits and to learn to recycle,” stated Paula Ilardo, Communications Manager.

To introduce residents to recycling, the group will be performing at several neighborhood block parties the Sanitation Department will host beginning in July, at school assemblies in the fall and at several of the October 14th G.A.I.N. events being held throughout Goodyear.

Led by Information Technology Services employee Chris Fidler as Curby, the group is made up of Carlos Valle, Sanitation; Linda Maynard, Community Services; Cayo Villa, Sanitation; Ron King, Fire; Cathy Hozian, Communications; and Mike Nassar, Building Safety.  Michael Leone of the Communications Division composed the new lyrics for some of the group’s songs.
