Goodyear Councilmember Scott Resigns;

Applications Being Accepted for Interim Seat


(GOODYEAR, AZ) Councilmember Fred Scott announced his resignation from the Goodyear City Council, effective Monday, March 13th. Four months remain in his term.  The City Council will act on his resignation at the February 26th  Regular Council meeting.


Scott, who was elected to his first Council term in 2003, had already decided not to run for re-election due to conflicts with his professional schedule now that he has taken the position of Physician Advisor to the Lake Havasu Regional Medical Center.


“My new position requires that I commute to Lake Havasu weekly, so I chose not to run for a second term knowing I could not devote the time necessary to my role of councilmember,” stated Scott.  “I had hoped to finish out my current term, but I am so busy I really can’t stretch it out and feel the best thing to do is resign now.”


“I regret having to leave the Goodyear City Council,” Scott continued. “The role of elected official was a new and wonderful experience for me after retiring from the medical profession. I thoroughly enjoyed served our citizens for almost four years and am proud of what was accomplished during that time.  However, I missed the medical field. When I had the chance to return to it, I felt I needed to seize the opportunity.”


City Manager Stephen Cleveland said that Councilmember Scott will be missed.  “He was an asset to the Council. Staff and other Councilmembers appreciated the insight he brought to many issues.”


In accordance with the City Charter, within 30 days of accepting Scott’s resignation, the City Council must appoint someone to finish out his term which ends June 11, 2007.  Councilmembers will be chosen

for three available seats, including Scott’s, at a Primary Election on March 13th or, if needed, at a General Election on May 15th.  These Councilmembers will be inaugurated on June 11, 2007.


In the interim, a City Council subcommittee which will recommend to the City Council an appointee chosen from the pool of applicants seeking the temporary seat. The City Council will take final action on the appointment at the March 26th Regular Council meeting. Applications for the Council seat may be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office at 190 N. Litchfield Rd. or downloaded from the City’s website – - as early as Feb. 27th. All applications must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office by March 12th at 5 p.m.  If you have any questions, please call 623-882-7830.
