Goodyear Monitoring Smoldering Fire

at MC85/Cotton Lane

(GOODYEAR, AZ) The City of Goodyear is monitoring a fire in a large debris pile that has continued to smolder since it was first reported on Sat., April 7, 2007.

The fire is located off Cotton Lane, between MC85 (Buckeye Road) and the Gila River on land owned by the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD), outside the City of Goodyear corporate limits.

City of Goodyear Fire Department units, assisted by those from other Valley jurisdictions, prevented the fire from spreading to several adjacent debris piles through the application of more than 75,000 gallons of water over a 12-hour period on Saturday.

The sheer size of the debris pile, coupled with its inaccessibility, makes complete extinguishment impossible. The fire could burn for at least a week.

The City of Goodyear is exploring mitigation options for the remaining debris piles and will continue monitoring the fire until it burns out.

Investigation determined the fire was caused by the improper disposal of a dump truck loaded with hot debris.
