Community Emergency Response Team Classes Offered by the City of Goodyear

(GOODYEAR, AZ) - Goodyear encourages its residents to learn to help their neighbors or co-workers in event of a disaster by attending Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes. CERT classes are now being offered to Goodyear residents over 18 years of age. Classes are usually 10 weeks, however, the Summer Class will be accelerated and begins Tuesday, June 5. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday during June, plus Sat., June 16 from 8 a.m. to noon. Class locations will vary, but most will be held at Goodyear City Hall, 190 N. Litchfield Rd. City of Goodyear employees who have been trained as CERT trainers will be conducting the classes.

The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical procedures including opening airways, controlling bleeding and treating for shock. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference.

CERT Classes Offered

Using their training, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace during an event when professional responders like Police, Fire Department or Public Works staff are not immediately available to help. CERT members can also assist with non-emergency projects that improve the safety of the community. Distribution and/or installation of smoke alarms, replacement of smoke alarm batteries in the homes of seniors, distribution of disaster education material, and provision of services at special events are also services that can be provided by CERT trained people.
