Goodyear Appoints First Full-Time Judge in City’s History

(GOODYEAR, AZ) - The Goodyear City Council has re-appointed Michael Simonson to a two-year term as Presiding Judge of the Goodyear Municipal Court; however, this time it’s with a twist. Simonson is now a full-time City employee, not part-time as has been the case since he first started presiding in 1999. Growth in Goodyear’s court cases warranted a full-time municipal judge for the first time since the City’s incorporation.

“Keeping pace with significant growth continues to be the Goodyear Municipal Court’s greatest challenge,” says Simonson. “I am honored to serve such a wonderful community.”

As head of the municipality’s Judicial Branch, Simonson reports to the presiding judge of the Arizona Superior Court. In addition to presiding over hearings at the court, Simonson is available 24 hours a day to issue search warrants and court orders.

“Judge Simonson brings 23 years of judicial experience to the Goodyear Municipal Court,” states City Manager Stephen Cleveland. “His background makes him a great addition to the City.”

Judge Simonson has presided over 900 trials since he was initially appointed to the bench in 1984 as a Judge Pro-Tem with the Phoenix Municipal Court.
