Power Outage Affects Electric and Water Service

for Estrella Residents in Goodyear

(GOODYEAR, AZ)  APS says they expect power to be restored between 6:30 and 7 p.m. today to the 5,000 homes in Goodyear and Buckeye, including all of Estrella (formerly known as Estrella Mountain Ranch), that have been affected by an outage occurring about midnight last night.  The power interruption was caused by vandals cutting the guy wires holding up an APS pole that is the main feeder for a substation servicing Estrella.

As a result of the power outage, the City of Goodyear lost power to its Water Storage Site 13 which services the Estrella area. The well’s emergency generator immediately kicked in, but experienced problems about 5 a.m. causing residences, especially in the higher elevations, to experience reduced water pressure.  Residents were never without water, as was reported in an earlier press release. Goodyear residents living south of the Gila River had reduced water pressure for only a short time before the backup generator was repaired.  By 8 a.m. normal water pressure was fully restored to Site 13. City staff remains at the well site monitoring operations until the APS situation is rectified. There will be no noticeable difference to residents when the City’s water system switches from backup power this evening after all power is restored by APS.

To aid citizens on this hot summer day when temperatures are expected to reach 107 degrees, APS began delivering dry ice and bagged ice to Estrella’s Starpointe Residents Center at Elliot Rd. & Estrella Parkway at approximately 11:00 this morning.  Residents are being urged to wear cotton or leather gloves and bring a cooler or plastic bag to hold the dry ice as it can cause severe burns or property damage if mishandled.

Additionally, Goodyear’s Fire Station 182 located on Estrella Parkway has ice and water available for residents.

Since TVs, internet and landline telephones were not working due to the power outage, the City of Goodyear set up a hotline for residents who called on their cell phones.  The City also set up electronic message boards on Estrella Parkway alerting the residents of Estrella about the availability of ice and the hotline number to call for more details of the water and power outage.

Monday morning, the City of Goodyear also sent Public Works employees out on a flatbed truck through the Estrella neighborhoods with a public address system telling the residents of the availability of ice, the restoration of water, the expected 4 p.m. power restoration and announcing the City’s 623-932-3823 hotline number.

Information about the outage is available on Goodyear’s website at www.goodyearaz.gov.

The APS hotline for this power outage is 602-258-5483.
