Goodyear Announces New Economic Development Director

(GOODYEAR) – Goodyear has tapped Harry Paxton, CEcD, who has 17 years experience in the economic development arena as its new Economic Development Director.

Paxton is currently a Senior Economic Development Specialist in Chandler. He spent the past seven years in that city where he has participated in the recruitment of more than six million square feet of some of the most premier retail development in the Southeast Valley. His Chandler experience also includes business retention and redevelopment through the

marketing of programs that helped attract more than $7 million in private reinvestment. Most recently Paxton was working on industrial recruitment specializing in aviation, semi-conductor/electronics and emerging technologies.

“Chandler has experienced much of the same type of economic growth that Goodyear is looking forward to,” stated Brian Dalke, Goodyear’s Interim City Manager. “Paxton’s role in its industrial and retail successes and retention and redevelopment give him a great foundation to accomplish the economic investment we expect in Goodyear.”

Prior to his work in Chandler, Paxton served as Assistant Director of the Silver City-Grant County Economic Development Corporation where he managed an entrepreneurship program in four counties of Southwest New Mexico.  During his 10 years there, Paxton fostered economic development by assisting in the start-up of over 100 new businesses, expanding existing businesses and helping companies obtain approximately $14 million in capital.

In 2000, Paxton recruited Stream International, Inc to the Silver City which created over 800 jobs – the largest single job creation in the area since the late 1960’s.  He was also awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) for the construction of the Global Resource Center on the campus of Western New Mexico University.

“Having the opportunity to take part in shaping the future of a community with as much promise as Goodyear is very exciting,” said Paxton. “Goodyear is fortunate to have several long-standing assets such as great transportation corridors and the Phoenix Goodyear Airport.  Additionally, the city is creating new infrastructure and assets such as the employment corridor, City Center and spring training complex that will provide industry with the opportunity to operate successfully in a 21st Century economy.”

Paxton, who obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1992 from Western New Mexico University and a B.S. in Finance in 1987 from Arizona State University, is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) and Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP). Paxton is a member of International Economic Development Council (IEDC), was an instructor of a New Mexico IEDC Certified Course for six years and served as a 2007-2008 board member for the Arizona Association for Economic Development.

Paxton, who is married with three children, will begin his new position July 23.
