Young Joshua Gass Honored by Goodyear City Council

(GOODYEAR) When Mayor Jim Cavanaugh proclaimed July 10th as Joshua Gass Day in Goodyear, Arizona, the audience at the July 9th City Council meeting broke into applause, a wide grim crossed the face of eight-year-old, Goodyear resident Joshua Gass and tears welled up in his mother’s eyes. It was an exceptional moment made even better by Mayor Cavanaugh’s presentation of a check for $1,005 to young Gass as the City of Goodyear’s contribution toward his fundraising efforts to conquer leukemia and lymphoma.

Joshua, who was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in June, 2006 at age 6, has raised more than $30,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. For his impressive efforts, he received the “Person with a Purpose Award” at the society’s Hope Ball in May.

Mayor Cavanaugh attended the ball and was amazed by Joshua and his accomplishments.  “I was overwhelmed at how inspiring this young man is and what an extraordinary feat he had achieved despite his own illness,” stated Cavanaugh.

Joshua's fundraising efforts are continuing. According to his website, the goal of Joshua’s team this year is to raise $80,000. He has even announced plans to broaden the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night Walk by adding a Kids’ Light the Night Walk this year.

Recently, a drawing of Joshua's was chosen by the Phoenix Children's Hospital (PCH) as one of five designs the hospital offered for sale to corporations for their Christmas cards as part of PCH’s fundraising efforts.  Joshua’s design was the first one sold – helping him towards his $80,000 goal!

According to the ever hopeful young Gass, "One of these dollars will be the one that will make us all better."
