Bullard Road Under I-10 Closing for Several Months

(GOODYEAR) Bullard Avenue under Interstate 10 between McDowell Rd. and the entrance to Snyder’s of Hanover will be closed from July 23 through early Spring 2008. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in conjunction with the City of Goodyear, decided to close the road to speed construction by at least two months and maintain a safer work zone while ADOT crews widen Bullard Avenue to four lanes in each direction under I-10 and construct a full freeway interchange.

Electronic message boards have been placed on Bullard Ave. to alert motorists who frequently use the road.  After the closure, sign boards will be placed east and west on both Van Buren St., and McDowell Rd. suggesting Litchfield Rd. and Estrella Parkway as alternative routes.  Signs will also be placed east and west on Indian School Rd. to warn motorists turning south onto Bullard Ave.  A sign will also be on Bullard Ave. north of McDowell so southbound motorists are aware of the closure.

Bullard Ave. will be completely closed under I-10. During the closure motorists will not be able to go south of McDowell Rd. onto Bullard Ave.  However, access north to Bullard Ave. from Van Buren St. will not be totally closed; instead it will be restricted to “local business traffic only.”  Therefore, motorists on Van Buren St. will be able to turn north onto Bullard Ave. to access the Bullard Goodyear Commerce Center, Southwest Specialty Foods, and Snyder’s of Hanover.  They will not be able to access McDowell Rd.

The new interchange will serve the future Estrella Falls Regional Mall located north of McDowell Rd. between Bullard Ave. and Estrella Parkway and the many power centers surrounding the mall, some of which are already under construction. At the request of the City of Goodyear, ADOT is adding to the aesthetics of the project by including public art on the bridge structure of the new interchange.

Bullard Ave. will eventually be widened to four lanes in each direction from I-10 north to McDowell Rd. by area developers and to three lanes in each direction from I-10 south to Van Buren St. by the City of Goodyear.

The Bullard Avenue Traffic Interchange project is part of an upcoming series of improvements for I-10 in the West Valley. While the interchange is under construction, ADOT will also begin constructing one general purpose lane and one HOV lane on I-10 from Sarival Ave. to Loop 101.

Construction-related inquiries can be directed to Brock Barnhart, ADOT Communication and Community Partnership Division, at 602.712.7176. For more information on the I-10 projects, please call the ADOT Project Hotline at 602.288.9905 or visit:
