Goodyear approves 75-day deal with Reds
GOODYEAR, AZ – The Goodyear city council met Monday in a special meeting and approved a 75-day exclusivity agreement between the city and the Cincinnati Reds.
Under the terms of the deal, Goodyear will not talk with any other Major League Baseball clubs for the next 75 days, and the Reds will not talk or negotiate with any other city, individual or organization about relocating the team’s spring training facility.
Goodyear must be able to show it can come up with satisfactory funding commitments within 45 days of the agreement, or the Reds can call off the deal. The city plans on looking at all funding options, which may include working with the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority and the state legislature.
“The 75-day window allows the city to make plans that work well within our budget approval process,” said Goodyear Interim City Manager Brian Dalke. “It’s important that we know what our budget is going to look like for 2009 as we work on the details with the Reds.”
