Fit To Fight Firefighter Relay
Goodyear, Sun City West and Daisy Mountain Fire Departments compete for top spot
GOODYEAR, AZ – Step up to the finish line and cheer on your favorite firefighters for the 2008 Fit To Fight Desert Challenge Arizona. Dressed in full turn-out gear, relay teams will cover 76 miles of terrain in the Southwest Valley, squaring off in a final Combat Challenge at the end of the race.
About 50 competitors from Goodyear, Sun City West and Daisy Mountain Fire Departments will pair up in two-person teams for the event. The grueling 76-mile course winds through Goodyear, all the way to Rainbow Valley and back again, finally reaching the finish line in Goodyear Community Park on Litchfield Road.
The teams then square off in a combat challenge on the other side of the finish line in Goodyear Community Park, showing their stuff in competitions that test their firefighter mettle.
The relay begins at 7 a.m., Saturday March 8, in Estrella at Goodyear Fire Station 182, 10701 S. Estrella Parkway, Goodyear.
Relay teams will reach the finish line and square off in the final combat challenge from 4 to 7 p.m. at Goodyear Community Park, 3151 N. Litchfield Road, Goodyear. The team that accumulates the most mileage on the relay route wins.
The winning team takes home the coveted Red, White and Blue Helmet.
The purpose of the Fit-To-Fight Relay challenge is to raise awareness of the importance of wellness and healthy lifestyle habits among firefighters, and reduce the rate of heart disease and cardiac-related deaths. In 2004, more than half of all firefighter deaths nationwide were caused by stress and overexertion. Fit-To-Fight Relay brings attention to the role of health, wellness and physical fitness in the ongoing training of firefighters.
