High school students wanted for Goodyear’s new Youth Commission
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (Sept. 18, 2008) – Goodyear is looking for members for its new Youth Commission. Students selected to serve on the new commission will have an opportunity to learn about local government and advise city council and staff on matters that are important to young people in the community. Issues may include new city recreation facilities and park amenities, as well as youth programming and recreation events. Youth Commission members will also gain an understanding of how local government operates and the importance of public participation.
A total of nine students will be selected to serve on the Youth Commission. Members will include one student from each of the following five high schools: Agua Fria, Desert Edge, Estrella Foothills, Millennium and Verrado. Four members-at-large will also be selected to serve on the Commission.
Students who attend alternative schools or are home-schooled are encouraged to apply for the at-large positions.
All students must be Goodyear residents. Each of the five high school members will serve two-year terms, beginning in January 2009. The four at-large members will serve only one-year terms, beginning January 2009. These shorter terms will effectively establish a system of staggered terms, ensuring that there are student members with at least one year of experience serving at all times. When the first one-year terms of the initial commission members end in 2010, four new at-large members will be selected for two-year terms. Students will serve no more than two years on the commission.
