Governor to Speak at Grand Opening of

Goodyear/Indians Spring Training Complex

 

DATE:     Saturday, September 27, 2008

TIME:     6 to 9 p.m.

  6:15 p.m. speakers begin

               6:40 p.m. ribbon cutting with Governor

                        

Governor Janet Napolitano will help celebrate the opening of the Cactus League’s newest practice facility, the Goodyear Recreational Complex which houses the year round Player Development Complex for the Cleveland Indians.

 

The Complex features the Indians’ clubhouse, six full-sized practice fields, batting tunnels, half fields and a concession stand.  Four of the six practice fields are lighted. 

 

The four lighted fields and the concession stand can be used by the City of Goodyear whenever Spring Training is not in session and is the site of Saturday’s grand opening ceremonies.

 

This complex is the first phase to open of the $108 million Spring Training Ballpark/Development Complex Goodyear is building for the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds. Fact sheet attached.

  • Children will be actively involved in soccer, whiffle ball and baseball clinics for fielding, batting and running bases from 6:40 to 7:20 p.m. on three of the complex’s four lighted, full-sized baseball fields.

 

DIRECTIONS

Take I-10 to Estrella Parkway exit.  Go south on Estrella. Turn left on Wood Boulevard (south of Lower Buckeye Road) from Estrella Parkway.  Media parking will be near clubhouse.

Reds’ facilities will be basically the same, just south of the Indians’ area

 

8 of the fields (4 in Indians complex and 4 in Reds complex) will be used by the community for tournaments and events for 10 months of the year. Each team will use their other 2 fields for year-round training. During the two months of spring training, the teams will be using all the fields.
