See the 60-foot tall baseball sculpture arrive for installation Friday

Goodyear Ballpark

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Jan. 13, 2009) – A 60-foot baseball sculpture created by a world-renown artist is expected to arrive Thursday evening and will be installed Friday at the Goodyear Ballpark after traveling nearly 2,000 miles on a flatbed semi truck.

A crane and other specialized equipment will be on site for the installation of the 6,000-pound fiberglass sculpture, which will take four to six hours to complete.

The sculpture, located at the main entrance of Goodyear’s 10,000-seat baseball stadium, was created by artist Donald Lipski. It will serve as a focal point and meeting place for fans visiting the ballpark. The sculpture is 60 feet, 6 inches high – the distance from home plate to the pitcher’s mound.

The giant fiberglass-and-steel creation was made at the Fiberglass Animals, Shapes & Trademarks Corp. (“FAST”) in Sparta, Michigan. For more than 20 years, FAST has been creating amusing and amazing fiberglass sculptures for businesses, towns and schools across the country. Chances are the enormous fiberglass hamburger, ice cream cone, or rooster outside your favorite eatery came from this company known for its whimsical creations.

The $450,000 art work was inspired by the world-renown Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and incorporates the themes of baseball and flight. Donald Lipski was selected to create this public art project by a group of art and architecture professionals, and a panel of community members. Lipski presented the concept and took comments during a public meeting last year. The artist was born in Chicago in 1947. His works have been exhibited at the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and many other venues.

Artist Donald Lipski will be available for interviews on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17. Times and dates are subject to change depending on road conditions, weather, and other variables.
