Art bench installation
slated for June 26
GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (June 17, 2009) Five unique "art
benches" will be installed on Western Avenue, just east of Litchfield
Road, Friday, June 26.
Four people will be
needed to off-load each of the five decorative benches. Once the benches are
on-site, artist James Hendricks will begin the work of permanent installation,
bolt and tack weld.
Hendricks has designed
and fabricated these five unique benches that reflect the history of Goodyear.
His benches are an integral part of the Western Avenue Streetscape Improvement
Project and will be a true point of pride for the city.
The artist received
input from Historic Goodyear residents and business owners regarding the themes
and content of each bench. Themes include aviation, agriculture, Estrella Mountain landscape, and desert birds and animals. The artist researched Goodyear's
historic photos for images that will be used on photo-tiles for two of the
bench seats. Benches will be cool and comfortable to sit on and treated with a
James Hendricks was
one of 32 artists who submitted qualifications for this project. He was
selected by a panel that included community representatives, an Arts and
Culture Commission member and city staff. The Arts and Culture Commission
approved the artist selection. He worked closely with Logan Simpson Design, who
is heading the streetscape improvement project, and city staff. Total project
budget is $25,000.
Hendricks is a native
of San Antonio with more than 20 years experience as an artist and craftsman.
He has created 12 art benches for the City of San Antonio and has produced more
than 60 private and public commissions.
