Artist to unveil
concept for city building in Goodyear
GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Oct. 19, 2009) The concept for the
public art project proposed for the Goodyear Public Works/Water Administration
Building will be unveiled Thursday, October 22.
Artist Marta Thoma will present her design for
the project, planned for the exterior of the building, during a meeting from 7
to 8 p.m. in room 117 of City Hall, 190 N. Litchfield Rd., Goodyear.
As in the previous August 27 meeting, this San
Jose-based artist will invite comments from the public and is interested in
feedback from local residents.
The meeting is open to the public and
participation is encouraged.
Thoma, considered a "green artist"
for her use of recycled materials in her art, was selected from a field of more
than 80 entries by a panel of residents, staff and arts professionals. The
city's art ordinance allows for funding of public art costing up to 1 percent
of the city's capital improvement project budget each year.
The artist often references nature and the
environment in her work and uses bottles that were destined for the landfill.
Students from a Goodyear elementary school will furnish used bottles that will
be treated then incorporated into the project. Thoma has more than 20 public
art commissions and exhibitions to her credit.
The proposed artwork will appear on Goodyear's
Public Works/Water Administration Building, located on Estrella Parkway just
south of MC 85.
