Arts Interact Exhibit

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Aug. 13, 2010) More than 45 people attended a recent reception celebrating Arts Interact, a special public art exhibit.

Arts Interact is a City of Goodyear program developed from the Mayor?s Initiative on Children with Disabilities that brings art activities to students with special needs. Theresa Shostakovich, an experienced artist and teacher, guided nine students with emotional and mental disabilities to create animal-themed paintings.

Estrella Foothills and Desert Edge high schools, partnered with ARTability, a statewide program that helps connect arts organizations and individuals with disabilities, for the project, which was funded by a generous donation from APS, with additional support from VSA Arizona, a VSA affiliate and a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts.

The artwork was on display throughout June and July, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and then returned to the student artists.

Supporting the program and attending the event were members of the City Council, Goodyear Arts and Culture Commissioners, representatives from ARTability and APS, who joined the students and their family and friends for the reception at City Hall on July 7.
