Goodyear mayor resigns
GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Nov. 15, 2010) Goodyear Mayor Jim
Cavanaugh has announced his resignation, effective 8 a.m. today.
Vice Mayor Georgia Lord now serves as acting mayor and will
preside at today's regular council meeting and work session beginning at 4 p.m.
A Special Meeting of the Goodyear City Council is scheduled for 8
a.m., Wednesday, November 17 at the Goodyear Justice Center, 185 N. 145th Ave.,
Goodyear. At that time, the Council will recognize the vacancy in the office of
the Mayor, appoint an Interim Vice Mayor, and call for a special election.
Cavanaugh was re-elected to a third term as Goodyear mayor in
March, 2009, and there are more than two years currently remaining on his term
in office. Goodyear's City Charter requires that the council hold a special
election to fill the unexpired term of the mayor's office. Calling for a
special election requires 120 days notice. Additional details will be announced
as they become available.
