Gelzer appointed to
ARIZ. (Dec. 14, 2010) Gary Gelzer was appointed to fill a temporary vacancy
on the Goodyear City Council. The council voted unanimously to appoint Gelzer
during a Dec. 13 meeting. The appointment will be official when Gelzer is sworn
in during the next regular Goodyear City Council Meeting scheduled for Jan. 10,
order to serve on the council, Gelzer must resign from his position as a
Planning and Zoning commissioner.
this appointment, Gelzer steps in to fill the vacancy left by former Vice Mayor
Georgia Lord on Nov. 15. Lord had two years left on her term of office.
Arizona's "resign to run" law required that she step down in order to
run for Mayor in March to fill the vacancy left last month when former Goodyear
Mayor James Cavanaugh resigned unexpectedly.
will serve as an interim City Council member until a permanent councilmember is
elected to fill the seat this spring. An election is scheduled for March 8, and
if necessary, a run-off election will take place in May.
has been a resident of Goodyear since 2000. He has served on the Planning and
Zoning Commission for the past seven years, and was a member of the 2003-2013
General Plan Committee, the Citizen Bond Committee, Citizen Tax Committee,
Citizen Budget Committee, and the Higher Education Committee. For the past nine
years, Gelzer has attended city council meetings regularly. Gelzer retired in
1991 from the Navy Reserve as a lieutenant commander.
