Communications Office

For Immediate Release: Dec. 14, 2010

Gelzer appointed to council seat

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Dec. 14, 2010) Gary Gelzer was appointed to fill a temporary vacancy on the Goodyear City Council. The council voted unanimously to appoint Gelzer during a Dec. 13 meeting. The appointment will be official when Gelzer is sworn in during the next regular Goodyear City Council Meeting scheduled for Jan. 10, 2011.

In order to serve on the council, Gelzer must resign from his position as a Planning and Zoning commissioner.

With this appointment, Gelzer steps in to fill the vacancy left by former Vice Mayor Georgia Lord on Nov. 15. Lord had two years left on her term of office. Arizona's "resign to run" law required that she step down in order to run for Mayor in March to fill the vacancy left last month when former Goodyear Mayor James Cavanaugh resigned unexpectedly.

Gelzer will serve as an interim City Council member until a permanent councilmember is elected to fill the seat this spring. An election is scheduled for March 8, and if necessary, a run-off election will take place in May.

Gelzer has been a resident of Goodyear since 2000. He has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the past seven years, and was a member of the 2003-2013 General Plan Committee, the Citizen Bond Committee, Citizen Tax Committee, Citizen Budget Committee, and the Higher Education Committee. For the past nine years, Gelzer has attended city council meetings regularly. Gelzer retired in 1991 from the Navy Reserve as a lieutenant commander.
