Free recycling event nets 58,500 pounds of e-waste

 

 

GOODYEAR, ARIZ.  (Jan. 31, 2011) The electronics waste recycling day at Estrella Mountain Community College on Jan. 29 was a roaring success. Goodyear, along with other local communities and organizations, teamed up with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for this event.

 

More than 750 vehicles brought 58,500 pounds of e-waste to EMCC to be recycled, with Goodyear leading the pack. Cities, towns and communities participating and numbers of vehicles from each were Goodyear,  257; Avondale, 153; Litchfield Park, 145; Buckeye, 43; Phoenix, 36; Surprise, 32; Sun City,  20; Glendale, 13; Tolleson, 14; Waddell, 12; Peoria,  7; Sun City West,  9; Tonopah, 5; El Mirage,  3; and Gila Bend, 1.

 

This e-waste recycling event had the greatest attendance since ADEQ began its free electronics waste recycling program in 2009.

 

The event was co-sponsored by ADEQ and its partners: the cities of Goodyear, Avondale, Litchfield Park and Tolleson, Littleton Elementary School District, Estrella Mountain Community College and E-Waste Harvesters of Phoenix.

 

ADEQ extended special thanks to EMCC Sustainability Coordinator Susan Staal for her help in acquiring use of the site, Avondale Recycling Director Les Miller for his help the day of the event, and Avondale Public Information Officer Pier Simeri, Goodyear Public Information Officer Nora Fascenelli and Litchfield Park Assistant City Manager Sonny Culbreth for their publicity efforts.
