Gary Gelzer appointed to fill Goodyear city council vacancy

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (April 19, 2011) Gary Gelzer was appointed last night to fill the vacancy on Goodyear's city council after Frank Cavaliere resigned last month with two years remaining on his term.

Gelzer has served on Goodyear's City Council since December 2010, filling the seat created by Vice Mayor Georgia Lord when she resigned from the council to run for mayor. Since 2003, Gelzer has served on Goodyear's Planning and Zoning Commission, serving as Chairman for the past three years. He has also served on several committees, including the 2003-2013 General Plan Committee, Citizen Bond Committee, Citizen Tax Committee, Citizen Budget Committee and the City?s Higher Education Committee.

Gelzer was appointed following an interview process led by a council subcommittee. Seven applicants were interviewed by the sub-committee last week, and three applicants were invited to participate in a public forum interview during a special council meeting on Monday, April 18. The three finalist candidates were Elizabeth "Tory" Anderson, Gary Gelzer and Robert Williams.

The council vote for Gelzer was 4 to 2, with council members Joanne Osborne and Sheri Lauritano voting no. Gelzer was sworn in immediately after the vote, and will take his seat on the dais at the next council meeting on April 25.

Council members expressed appreciation to all candidates for participating in the process and encouraged everyone to stay engaged as active community members.
