Parque De Paz Memorial dedication ceremony to honor local soldier killed in action
GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Nov. 2, 2011) Please join us at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, for the dedication of the Parque De Paz Memorial, commemorating the men and women of the U. S. Armed Forces who have given their lives in the line of duty. Parque De Paz is located at 1601 W. Palo Verde Dr., Goodyear, AZ 85395.
Special guests attending the Parque De Paz Memorial dedication include family and friends of Staff Sgt. Christian Garcia, who was killed in the line of duty on April 2, 2011, in Babil, Iraq, when his unit was attacked by insurgents. Garcia was with Maintenance Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. A member of the clergy will offer an invocation and blessing. Councilmember Wally Campbell, who is also the official neighborhood representative, will speak briefly. A balloon send-off will close the dedication ceremony. Light refreshments will be served.
The Parque De Paz Memorial was inspired by Staff Sgt. Garcia's death and the community's desire to honor his memory and his service to his country. Goodyear Parks Division repurposed an empty planter, transforming it into a fitting memorial using plants, cacti, rocks, a boulder and an existing tree. A ribbon was crafted from yellow lantana, one of the most colorful desert flowers. An American flag was fashioned using a variety of red, white and blue flowers. A barrel cactus and bougainvillea represent colors of Arizona?s state flag.
