Goodyear hosts reception for Susunkewa family artists
GOODYEAR, ARIZ. (Nov. 10, 2011) The public is invited to a reception and special viewing of artwork by three members of the Susunkewa family from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 17 in Goodyear City Hall. These three West Valley artists will be recognized at 5:45 p.m. on the second floor of City Hall, 190 N. Litchfield Rd.
For the Susunkewa family, creating art is a way of life. Hopi kachinas by Manfred Susunkewa, coil baskets by Norma Susunkewa and contemporary paintings by their daughter Sheryl Susunkewa are currently on display in City Hall. Manfred is credited with reviving the "old style" of Kachina using natural earth pigments on carved cottonwood tree roots. Sheryl, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Arizona State University, has exhibited her work widely. Her paintings are in several public and private collections. All three artists have earned numerous awards and show their work at the Heard Museum and in Santa Fe, N.M.
The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 623-882-7809.
