Goodyear Launches Campaign To Alert Citizens About Bulk Trash Collection Days Being Reduced To Once a Month Beginning Oct. 1
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The City of Goodyear announced today the launch of a monthlong campaign to make its citizens aware that bulk trash pickup days will occur only once a month beginning on Oct. 1, 2012, according to Deputy Director, Environmental Services Jerry Postema. Currently, bulk trash items are picked up from curbs twice a month.
The recommendation to reduce bulk trash pickup days to once a month was approved by City Council in April 2012 and was overwhelmingly supported by Goodyear residents in a citizen survey conducted in October 2011. Data from the citizen survey reflected that 85 percent of residents used bulk trash pickup only once a month and sometimes less. Half of the respondents who said they used bulk trash pickup twice a month supported the reduction to once a month.
“The decision to reduce our bulk trash collection days to only once a month will save the City of Goodyear more than $300,000 annually in operations costs,” Postema said. “Not only did we listen to our residents’ preferences, but we are also educating them on what day their bulk trash collection day will be so we do not have an abundance of bulk trash items on curbs throughout our neighborhoods for a long period of time.”
Starting this week, Goodyear residents will begin receiving flyers in their monthly utility bill as well as having stickers placed on their tan trash cans that include information to direct them to the City’s website at goodyearaz.gov/trash. On the website landing page, residents can click on the Sanitation Service Day Finder link and then enter their house number address to discover which day of the month will be their new bulk trash collection date. The website will also include short videos to show residents how to use the Sanitation Service Day Finder link and what items should be left on the curb on bulk trash collection days. The City’s Communications & Marketing Division will also be posting information regarding the campaign throughout September and October on Facebook at facebook.com/goodyearazgov and on Twitter at twitter.com/GoodyearAZGov.
The purpose of the City of Goodyear’s bulk trash collection program is to pickup larger items that do not fit in regular-sized trash cans. Bulk trash items collected by the City of Goodyear include yard waste, furniture, mattresses, appliances and other large household items. All bulk items need to be tied in bundles or placed in boxes and placed on the curb on collection days.
The new bulk trash service does not affect the already established weekly pickup days for regular trash and recycle collection.
Goodyear residents can call the City’s Sanitation Department at 623-932-3010 or go to goodyearaz.gov/trash for more information.
