Goodyear 2011 crime rates down for 5th straight year

(GOODYEAR, AZ - FEB. 29, 2012) For the past five years, the total crime rate in Goodyear has been dropping steadily every year even as the city's population grew by 35 percent. That total crime rate is down to 29.00 per 1000 population vs. 53.9 in 2006. This crime rate includes "Part I" type crimes - violent and property crimes - each of which is expressed as per 1000 population. Violent crime (murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault) is down to 1.52 from 2.43 in 2007 and property crime (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson) are down to 27.48 vs. a high of 53.9 in 2006.

"Goodyear's Police Department has taken a more proactive management approach to crime in recent years by encouraging better communication between all levels of the organization to help identify potential crime hot spots and then focusing on rapid responses to crime problems," stated Goodyear Police Chief Jerry Geier. "Besides the department's proactive approach, it has helped to have the eyes and ears of the residents and business owners as community guardians alerting us to problems and partnering with us to keep Goodyear safe."

Other Part 1 crimes in Goodyear have generally decreased in 2011. There were no homicides in 2011. Arsons went down 67 percent, vehicle thefts down 48 percent and aggravated assault down 35 percent. The largest number of crimes per year - 924 - is in the theft category which saw a 4 percent rise over 2010. There were also 16 reported rapes in 2011, an increase of six over 2010 with five of these reported rapes actually occurring in years prior to 2011. Rapes are counted as statistic in the year they are reported; no matter what year they occurred.

Crime rate provides a good baseline for reviewing any agency's efforts towards the long term public safety of a community. However, multiple factors play a role in the public safety of a community, including, but not limited to:

w  The ability to target specific crime problems - geographic, type of crime, or prolific offenders.

w  A continued emphasis on communication through all levels and divisions of the Department.

w  Focus on Community Policing and communication with the citizens, business owners, and visitors to Goodyear.
